History
WITCHCRAFT (N 1153) is one of the most famous of the National 12 class dinghies. She was commissioned and owned by Dr Robin Steavenson, a top class and influential sailor of National Twelves. She was built by Wyche & Coppock with planks of marine plywood glued together without ribs and metal fastenings (as against clinker construction in previous boats of the class). Sailed by Robin Stevenson in 1953, she won the Sir William Burton Cup at the National Championships. The new form of construction was adopted immediately and was standard until 1970, (when a four-plank construction was introduced). WITCHCRAFT was ‘lost’ after Steavenson’s death in the 1990’s but she had been stored safely and made a reappearance in 2006 at the 70th Anniversary Regatta of the Class. December 2008
