History

Withdrawn from auction susprcted ROYAL LOAN.. This highly decorated boat is a standard fishing boat from Lanyu, an island 75 miles South East of Taiwan. The island’s indigenous people are Yami’s whose culture is centred on the sea. These people place great emphasis on the building and decoration of their boats whose origins are probably from islands far to the south of Taiwan. The boats are built by edge jointing carved planks together in much the same manner as the construction of an Indonesian Jarring or a boat from the Solomon Islands. Once they have successfully constructed the boat, they carve patterns and paint them using the traditional red, white, and black colours and designs. The most important design is “The eye of the boat” which consists of a variety of concentric circles edged with triangles. This composition represents the sun's rays, and is considered to ward off evil spirits that may cause disasters at sea. All the boats are built to the same chinedkhulan design with a high curved bow and stern but in varying sizes. The Yami consider a boat an extension of man's body, and thus boat building is deemed a sacred mission. A good example of these rare boats , Clean and display GH 27 Nov 16
