History

SUNSHINE is a small 18ft coble, a special kind locally known as ‘half cobles’, developed for hobbling and pilotage purposes at Sunderland. Boats so employed are called Foy boats. They have less sheer forward than those of most bigger cobles and their transoms are heavily raked to give them stability when towed behind or alongside ships stern first. They are one of the most distinctive and beautifully shaped working boats in Britain. This example was purchased by NMM from Sunderland Foy Boatmen. October 2007
