Brought back from Sri Lanka by the present owner and now on display in his shop in Portree. SKYE BATIK is an Oruwa which has a 26 ft. canoe type hull with a large outrigger. This is raised up to the shop ceiling as a centre piece. Details of this boat are available in the shop to anyone who is interested and a reasonable view of it can be seen on the google street shots (go down to google street map and then into the shop for a 3D look around). As a point of interest I have a dug out canoe of a similar type which I turned into a display unit in the shop and anyone interested can see what the Oruwa looks like inside from this. It has been repaired in the past using old coins as washers for the rivets. The Oruwa probably had thirty to fifty years of use before I bought it (that is my estimate based on nothing in particular). Wooden Oruwas are steadily being replaced by fibre-glass copies.
