History

RESTFUL (which had been RESTLESS for over 50 years) was built in 1898 as a lightweight boat designed to hang by davits from a leisure yacht. The designer and builders, C Sibbick & Co of Albert Yard, Cowes, Isle of Wight, were a well-known company in the 1890's specialising in the Solent One Raters and fast cruisers, having built WHITE ROSE for the then Duke of York in 1896. It is not known if RESTFUL was made as part of a luxury yacht's equipment or as an individual comission for an existing yacht. These pinnaces were used expressly to transfer the owners and guests and the yacht's senior officers to and from landing stages and other leisure yachts.. They were crewed by selected members of the main yacht's crew and would often have 'shewn off' and raced. RESTFUL would carry up to 4 passengers with a crew of 3 or 4. She would mostly be rowed (3 rowing thwarts) but, distance and weather permitting, she could be efficiently sailed. RESTFUL was taken off the Isle of Wight in 2008, 110 years after being built there. For about 70 years she was owned by the same family. Her hull, constructed of larch planks on oak frames, has been sheathed in GRP. Her mast is of larch and her gaff and boom are bamboo. April 2008
