History
Built about 1922 by James Goss at Bere Alston on the River Tamar and owned for most of fifty years by ‘Old Stan’, Mr Stanley Langsford. It was built from spare stock left over from previous constructions and was the last boat from the Goss yard before it closed. It is typical of the type used in the salmon fishery on the Tamar. The method of fishing involves flaking down the net in the stern of the boat. As the boat is rowed out across the river, the net sets itself in a large arc. After about five minutes the boat is rowed back to the bank and the net hauled. The fishing season lasts from March to August. OLD STAN was retired into the hands of the National Trust, from whom it was purchased by NMM in 1971. November 2007
