History

In 1938 the Commodore of Looe Sailing Club, Wilfred Neale, approached Uffa Fox with a commission for a racing dinghy that would be seaworthy enough to cope with the turbulent seas off the south Cornwall coast. The result was the Redwing. Mr. Neale had six boats built at his own expense, five of which he donated to Looe Sailing Club. The fleet grew and by 1954 jurisdiction for the class was handed over to the Yacht Racing Association (Now the Royal Yachting Association) and the Redwing became a National class.Today there are Redwings based in clubs around the UK and the USA. R 249 wasbuilt in 2009 by Stephen Beresford at the Goodwood Boatyard at Cockermouth, Cumbria and is curently on display at the NMMC Falmouth. - see article in Classic Boat 2004 January page 91 January 2011
