History
This canoe is probably the last seaworthy example of the type used on the Frankton Raid in 1942.
The 15ft Mark 2 was designed by F Goatley and uses the same folding method as his earlier 10 man collapsible boat. The MK 2 was very robust from every point of view. Its flat plywood bottom allowed it to be dragged over single and rocks without damage and when collapsed could be passed through the forward torpedo hatch of a small submarine. Raising and folding was very rapid with no loose parts thanks to Goatley’s unique hinged locking struts When collapsed it was only 6 ½ inches high and several canoes could be stacked up one upon the other.
This was the type of canoe used on the Frankton Raid: it was an extremely specialised canoe and required great skill to use. It had a total payload of 480 lbs including the crew of two February 2010
