History
A kayak is tailor made to fit the kayaker. This is important, for the kayaker must be in absolute control of his craft and its movements in all kinds of weather. The total length of the kayak should be approximately three times the height of its user and the width depends on the shape of the kayaker, particularly the width of his or her hips. The frame of the kayak is covered with seal skin. There is also a sealskin bag which can be inflated as a float, and hunting gear in the boat is made of whale or walrus ivory. This kayak was presented to H M The Queen by the Frobisher Bay community in 1970 and is on permanent loan to the Museum. Presumed to have been built about 1970 using some modern material including sawn wood , nails and nylon line GH April 2015.
