History
MISS ENGLAND I was designed by Fred Cooper and Hubert Scott Payne and built by the British Power Boat Company for Lord Wakefield of Hythe. She was fitted with a 12 cyl 925 hp Napier Lion Broad Arrow engine similar to those used in the Schneider Trophy aircraft of the period. In Miami in 1929, driven by Henry Segrave, MISS ENGLAND I regained the World Motor Boat Speed Championship from the American driver Gar Wood in MISS AMERICA VII. During the race she also set a World record for single engined craft of 91mph. Later she won the Motor Boat Speed Championship of Germany on the Templiner Lake, near Potsdam. Currently on display at the Science Museum, London. June 2011 GH (Picture courtesy of Classic Boat)
