History

Built by Crossfields in Arnside in 1937 as the MARYLL : a Morecombe Bay Prawner. For further details see NRHV DNMC's Vref 1598 August 2010 (Picture courtesy of Classic Boat). MARYLL, Morecambe Bay prawn boat, built 1937 by Crossfields of Arnside. LOA 26ft, MB 8ft, DR 4ft, 5 tons. Hull is carvel built of larch planking on oak frames fastened with iron nails. Has counter stern, pointed bow with plumb curved stem. 1 deck and 1 timber mast rigged as a cutter with gaff sails. Has in inboard diesel engine. Probably the last prawner built by Crossfields - smaller cutters capable of being worked by one man were still being built into the 1930s. Boat was laid up during the war and then converted to a yacht in 1948. Hull is sound and original. Deck and cabin top were changed when converted to yacht. Had been converted to bermudian rig and reuffered other 'grntrification' until purchased by present owner in 1997. At that tiem she was bing used as a houseboat in Walton backwaters. She has now been restored to the original gaff rig and has a new engine. She requried a ne deck, but her hull is remarkably sound. The long term intenion is to return her to working trim (no cabin). September 2010 (Picture courtesy of Classic Boat) SIGNIFICANCE: final evolution of the Prawner design, the lines giving more body 'aft' to take the power (engine), yet still being highly developed for sailing.
