History
MAI STAR II has a detailed history of previous owners although her origins are a little obscure. It seems likely that she was started in 1939 but not launched until 1946, after WW2 under the name of GADFLY, for her original owner, Mr CH Doughty of Margate.
Her present owner has researched MAI STAR II 's history until 2008 when he bought her himself. Mr D McSweeney bought GADFLY in 1989 and had her hauled out of the Thames and put on brokerage. Mr B Sumner of Sunbury then bought her, stripped the boat out and began restoration work.
Since 2008 extensive restoration work has been carried out by the present owner who has replaced old damaged planking and ribs, as well as having new cabin sides and roof made and fitted. He hopes MAI STAR II will be relaunched in the first half of 2015.
