History

JOYCE a Solent Galley (or Portsmouth Galley), was built for the now defunct Portsmouth Electricity Rowing Club by Harry Feltham of Old Portsmouth in 1937. Sold to Southampton Coalporters Amateur Rowing Club when Portsmouth Power Station closed (date tbc). JOYCE was found in a very bad state and rescued by Roger Hardy from 'Squeaker's' yard, a Southampton scrapyard in 1988 and restored by him after which it won an award at the Henley Historic Boat Rally. It was acquired by the late Pat Sherwin MBE in 1993 and is now one of five Solent Galleys owned by the Pat Sherwin Trust. These galleys were never used as work boats but pre-WWII most rowing clubs in the Solent area had some which were used for recreational rowing. This boat is still used regularly for the same purpose.
