History

JANE , originally named MARIA, was built in 1865 by Dan Hatcher for Robert Scovell in Southampton. (His first wife was called Maria.) She was built for oyster dredging and may have been one of the first boats to have an external lead keel as Hatcher was involved in the early stages of fitting them. In 1890 Robert Scovell married Sarah Jane Elphic which accounts for the boat's name change to JANE. It is believed she was converted to a pure sailing yacht in the late 1960's or early 70's. The present owner states that she is in need of some major restoration including new transom & sternpost, replanking & reframing. It is his intention to re-rig JANE and return her to her original open layout. 25th July 2015 NRJ
