History

Huris are dugout canoes made from wood imported unfinished from the Malabar coast of India. If the craft is to be used for fishing the sides are built up with washstrakes and supporting ribs, for general use as a ships boat or in the harbours they are left in their simplest form without washstrakes. Nov 2014 GH Huris act as tenders to Pearling Dhows and are usually carried across the platform of the stern. This Huri Doy No1 was built in Bahrain with wood imported from Pakistan, but resembles in every respect dugouts found along the Southern Persian and Baluchistan coasts. This is more sophisticated than many dugout canoes, having added stern and stern pieces. To the seafarers of the Persian Gulf it would be a comparatively expensive boat to produce but maintenance and running costs are low and it is very durable. Though rather unstable without an outrigger, the dugout is very fast due to its slim lines. This particular example has a number of pieces scarphed into it to replace faults in the original timber of the tree trunk. The wood has been oiled. This Huri was presented by Miss Ann Ashton of Brookfield, Abberley Lodge, Wiltshire. Sold at EISCA Auction 26/07/2017 to Omani Interests
