History
Believed to have been brought back from Canada 1788c by Captain Enys after his service in North America as an officer in the 29th Regiment of Foot. The canoe remained on the Enys estate until offered to the NMMC in February 2010. Initial research indicates that this canoe is undoubtably very old and that it contains much original material. More work needs to be done to establish its tribal origins. This process is being pursued on both sides of the Atlantic. A copy of the Enys Journals edited by Elizabeth Cometti and published by the Adirondack Musueum has been obtained and is being checked for clues as as to the origin of this canoe. To date no direct reference to this particular canoe has been found in the journals, however it is referred to in a footnote (49 pp 323) as 'having been acquired in Canada'. The canoe has now been taken off display at the NMMC and is now packed awaiting transport to the Canadian Canoe Museum GH Oct 2011
