History

FE was the first of the Firefly class of dinghy designed by Uffa Fox and built by Fairey Marine. The class was chosen as the official single-hander for the Olympics in 1948, the sailing events of which were held in Torbay. Four prototypes were used by Fairey Marine to test and demonstrate the class in 1946 before production started in the autumn. In 1948 the prototypes were bought by Sir Geoffrey Loules, Commodore of Itchenor Sailing Club and named FE, FI, FO, FUM. Subsequently owned by a consortium of four people, FE is now owned by the National Maritime Museum Cornwall. February 2009
