History

This boat was built was built in the late 1880’s by Sambo Parkins and Sons. It was the fourth such boat used primarily to take part in the annual Boat Procession to celebrate the birthday of George III on 4th June at Eton College. It was crewed by the senior oarsmen from different houses of the school. The ten oarsmen sat on thwarts, as opposed to sliding seats. For the celebrations a procession of boats, including MONARCH, would row past the college. As the boats passed the assembled families of pupils in front of the college, all ten oarsmen would stand up with their oars tossed and wave their straw boaters while trying to keep the boat upright. MONARCH was used up until 1990 and then presented to NMM by Eton College. October 2007
