History

Built in the 1930's, this ship’s lifeboat, which is of standard type was named Triton after the original paddle vessel that was used for sea training in Gravesend, which itself was used by the Gravesend Sea Training School before WWII, for training of merchant seaman in the 20th century. HMS Triton was a paddle survey vessel, launched in 1882. This ship was then given over to harbour service in 1914 and after the WWI in 1919, it was lent to the Gravesend Sea Training School. After WWI the hulked HMS Triton became the TS Triton and was moored in the London docks. The ship itself was broken up in 1961. Prior to this some of the equipment was used for the London School of Seamanship, London Docks. TS Triton was later scrapped (at an unknown date) and the lifeboat and equipment was moved to London School of Seamanship, St. Katherine's Dock. NMM
