History
This coracle is from Carmarthen on the River Tywr, South Wales and was built about 1968.. The framework consists of longitudinal, transverse and diagonal sawn ash laths interwoven to form a bluntly ovate shape. On this example there are nine transverse laths with one short lath spanning the bottom only position between the third and fourth laths. There are seven longitudinal and two diagonal laths and the whole frame is covered with calico and coated with pitch. It has the standard pine seat supported by a pine bulkhead, together with a leather carrying strap. Other fittings include a ‘priest’ or club for killing fish, a bank stick for mooring and a single- piece ash paddle without a grip or handle. It was presented to NMM by Cdr. R W English in 1978.
