History
Built by Hammerton of Thames Ditton in 1905 for a Mr Viner-Brady and remained in his family throughout her life. She was presented to NMM by Col. N E V Viner-Brady in 1969. This popular type of rowing boat was mainly used for recreation. It originated on the non-tidal reaches of the Thames. Many thousands were built and they are now found on rivers and lakes throughout Britain and elsewhere. The majority are still owned by boatyards and small operators who run boat hire businesses. A distinguishing feature of the skiff is the extra plank above the gunwale, called a saxboard, with open thole pins through which the sculls (oars) are used. October 2007 (Archive)
