History

WINNIE was built by William Brabyn at Calenick on the Fal in 1898/99 for Mr Edward Green Merrifield at a cost of £38.00 for hull and spars. The sails were made at F&CH Williams (sailmakers) in Falmouth for £10.16s.8d. She was named WINNIE after Edward Merrifield's eldest daughter, Winifred. Her brothers, John and Henry worked her in the winter and raced her in the summer for nearly 60 years. Henry Merrifield worked WINNIE on his own and often raced her with only his wife as crew.In 1969 WINNIE'S new owner, Mr Joe Keats used her for pleasure, changed her hull colour to maroon but soon returned to her original colour, white. Victor Angove fitted new decks & Terry Heard fitted a new iron keel. Ivor Martin bought WINNIE in 1979 and continued to use her for pleasure. WINNIE has belonged to her present owner and partner since 1988 and is still used for pleasure in the winter and for racing each summer. The Falmouth Working Boats Association is very pleased that WINNIE has not been sold out of the port as have many of the other wooden boats of this type. She continues to be used in the Falmouth waters with which she has been familiar all her long life. 02-July-16 NRJ
