History

The International Canoe class is one of the oldest classes in which International races take place between America and Britain for a cup from the New York Canoe Club, instituted in 1886. It is not a large class in England, raced at Hayling Island and Teddington (HQ of the Royal Canoe Club). In 1933 DEFIANT won the International Cup, sailed by Uffa Fox and Roger de Quincey. In her first 5 seasons no other boat came close to matching her success and in 1947 she was still able to win the premier Quincey Cup and the Royal Canoe Club Challenge Cup. She is the first International Canoe built to the new rules which allowed a sliding seat for the helmsman, designed by Uffa Fox. GH Jan 2014
