History
Removed from Beale park Dec 16 Built in C1870c based on the British Baden Powell touring canoe This craft was built in New York State USA (as stamped on the bulk heads). It is similar to the open decked English version built in the Victorian era, as in the photocopy document and has a unique folding fan centreboard made of brass which saved having a case inside the boat as the centreboard,s leaves folded like a fan when closed. The mahogany canoe was very well made and the builder paid great attention to detail. It had a neat jamming cleat, (which was way ahead of its time) and very well made gudgeons for the rudder. The lockable hatches imply the craft could have been left moored in safety.
This craft was found covered in a thick layer of dust in an old barn in Perkins Village, near Farrington in Devon and donated to ISCA in 1986 by then Captain, now Major Stephen Pyatt, Royal Engineers. It was then loaned to the Bordeaux Maritime Museum, in France, who carried out some major restoration and returned the canoe to ISCA at the end of the loan period.
