History
IOLANTHE was built in 1898 by Field & Co of Itchen Ferry as a Yorkshire One Design and first raced in 1898. The Class was designed by J S Helyar, the yard foreman at Field & CO (Classic Boat 1955 Aug). They were transported to Bridlington, Yorkshire by train. There they raced as the Pirate Yacht Club (later to be absorbed by the Royal Yorkshire Yacht Clubwhere their burgees are kept). The original Y1 was reputed to have have been named BETTY and is believed to have sunk at Bridlingtonl. Y2 was named SOUTHERN CROSS was lost at Dinnish, southern Ireland. GH Oct 2010 (Picture courtesy Classic Boat)
