History
Believed to have been built about 1900, THE LADIES GIG has five rowing positions and is said to have been used by the Wynn family of Fort Belan on the Menai Straits from 1900 up to 1937. Its builder is uncertain but features in the construction suggest it was William Roberts of Chester who was responsible for other vessels owned by the family. From about 1880 ladies' gig rowing had become a respectable and popular sporting activity nd races took place at the Caernarfon Regatta, supported by the local aristocracy.
Since being presented to the Merseyside Maritime Museum by Lord Newborough in 1986, the gig has been fully conserved with a minimum of replacement work. October 2006
