History
TERROR, an Emsworth oyster boat was probably built c.1850 or c.1880 by J.D. Foster of Emsworth and modelled on the lines of GRAMPUS which was destroyed by a bomb during WWII. This information, however, is uncertain. She is an unusual design with a very low freeboard and a 'whaleback' deck. This craft was considered by Classic Boat in Jan 2008 for the Restoration of the Year after restoration at the Dolphin Quay Boatyard see CB 222 & 235. Previous Owners were:- a) Mr Jack Kennet of Emsworth who owned her for about 5 years to look after his oyster beds in the Chichester, Langstone and Portsmouth Harbours. B) Mr Matthews who used her as a chalk barge from Paulsgrove Quay in Portsmouth Harbour. C) Portsmouth Sea Scouts. D) Mr David Clark of Paulsgrove who owned her for about five years before he drowned in a boating accident about 1960. E) Mr R.A. Leggett who owned the boat for a period up until 1971. F) Portsmouth Museum and Record Service from 1971 until 2000. G) In November 2000 the TERROR was bought by Mr J.I. Christmas and Mr C. White, to save her from destruction.
H) In 2003 she was taken on Chichester Harbour Conservancy and passed to Tim Gilmore for restoration. Source: Present Owners July 2010 (Picture courtesy of Classic Boat)
