History

DITHERUMPOP was one othe original eight (number 3 was not used as a sail number) of the Yorkshire O D class. They were designed by yard foreman,J S Helyar, and built in 1898 by Field and Co at Itchen Ferry, Hants., and later transported by train to Bridlington, Yorkshire. There they raced as the Pirate Yacht Club (later to be absorbed by the Royal Yorkshire Yacht Club where their burgees are kept). The original Y1 was reputed to have have been named BETTY and is believed to have sunk at Bridlingtonl. Y2 was named SOUTHERN CROSS was lost at Dinnish, southern Ireland. In the early years DITHERUMPOP under one of her owners, John Deheer, was consistently the leading boat. Various changes were made to the rig, influenced to a great extent by the Dragon class, and by 1973 all the fleet were Bermudan sloops. In1976 DITHERUMPOP was restored and a small Dragon-style cuddy was fitted. In 2010 she was underoging further restoration by Joe Irving. August 2010 (Picture courtesy of Classic Boat)
