History

This Morecombe Bay Shrimper was built in 1894 by Crossfield of Arnside, Cumbria for Thomas Woodhouse and James Gardner of Morecombe. She was launched as EDITH NORA, became DAYSTAR in 1950 and today is one of the oldest extant shrimpers. Known locally as a ‘nobby’, this type of vessel, as opposed to older models, had a long counter stern and a distinctive cutaway stem. It was fitted with a centreboard. Nobbies generally fished for shrimps using a beam trawl but were known to be used in summer as trip boats from the Lancashire resorts. Like many others, DAYSTAR was fitted with a Kelvin Diesel in 1948 with the shaft running out through the quarter. She was purchased by Merseyside Maritime Museum from her last working owner, Jack Willacy of Morecombe, in 1972 and has since been extensively restored. November 2007
